Having previously looked complacent, the UK financial markets have started to respond to the gloomier outlook for the macro-economy. Interest rate expectations, bond yields, equities and the pound have all fallen sharply over recent weeks. Nonetheless, our forecast that the downturn in the economy will be deeper and longer than most forecasters are still expecting suggests that these market movements have further to go in time.
