While last week brought some tentatively positive signs regarding bank lending, the news that the UK ran a record current account deficit in Q2, thanks to an investment income deficit, was less encouraging. While the pound’s recent rise and the euro-zone crisis caused overseas investment income to plunge, the deficit also reflected an underlying worsening of the UK’s net asset position.
