State-supported banking system still looks too weak to lend

The Government today announced more details on its latest round of assistance for UK banks. With the banking system still heavily dependent on state support, a significant pick-up in bank lending continues to look unlikely. We still expect the continued weakness of credit growth to act as a major constraint on the pace of economic recovery.
