At first glance, today’s data showing that the pace of decline in Egypt’s foreign currency reserves slowed last month is good news. Indeed, Egyptian markets have been buoyed by hopes that the economy will avert a fully-blown balance of payments crisis. But, with FX reserves still falling and the central bank running out of ammunition to defend the pound, the recent data should be treated with caution.
