Egypt: hopes fading for a quick deal with the IMF

The decision by the Egyptian parliament to reject the government’s economic plan highlights a growing rift between the Muslim Brotherhood and the military-appointed administration. Worryingly, this means that a deal with the IMF over a $3.2 billion loan package is unlikely to materialise soon. As things stand, it seems that Egypt needs to hit rock bottom before political consensus over the Fund’s help is reached.
