The recent surge in oil prices means that Colombia’s twin current account and budget deficits are unlikely to be a major concern over the next couple of quarters. However, it will still require a sustained fiscal squeeze to prevent the public debt-to-GDP ratio from rising over the coming years. That seems unlikely to materialise, especially if poll-leader Gustavo Petro wins the upcoming presidential election.
