When all’s said and done, the commodity price boom of the past decade will probably go down as a wasted opportunity for the economies of Latin America. Rather than saving and investing their windfall, the region – and in particular Brazil – embarked on a consumer spending spree. All of this leaves Latin America in a weaker position to withstand the period of lower commodity prices that we now expect.
