Rising unemployment, fiscal damage, USMCA

A dig into the recent labour market data shows that the hit has been even worse than the recent surge in headline unemployment rates suggests. With activity only recovering gradually, there will probably be prolonged damage to labour markets which will keep demand depressed. This will also increase the already mounting fiscal costs of the crisis. Finally, the new USMCA pact may improve the medium term outlook for Mexico’s economy.
