Lower energy prices likely to rattle policymakers

In terms of the boost to corporate and household spending power, Japan should be among the big winners from the fall in global energy prices. However, for policymakers, the resulting drag on inflation is likely to be a bigger concern. We expect consumer price inflation to slide further away from the policy target in coming months and for the Bank of Japan to respond with an accelerated pace of easing in the spring.
