Consumer price inflation is likely to have edged up in December as the unwinding of favourable base effects from food inflation more than offset the impact of tumbling oil prices and weak core price pressures. But the bigger picture is that inflation looks set to remain subdued by past standards, and a small pick-up shouldn’t deter the RBI from cutting interest rates early this year.
