The UN’s projection that India will become the world’s most populous nation as soon as 2022 has refocused attention on the country’s remarkable demographic potential and the impact this could have on its economic development. The key challenge for India’s policymakers is to ensure that the growing workforce is employed in sectors that generate rapid gains in productivity.
