The yield spreads of 10-year Spanish and Italian government bonds over German Bunds recently fell below 100bp for the first time since 2010. Given their grind lower since the summer of 2012, it is tempting to think that these spreads will continue to drift down towards the negligible levels that prevailed prior to the last financial crisis. But we are not convinced this will happen.
