Despite weaker signs of recovery in the euro-zone than elsewhere, the ECB’s policy support remains considerably narrower than other central banks’. President Trichet suggested today that the Bank is unlikely to adopt a policy of quantitative easing in the near term. Instead, it will continue to rely on providing liquidity to commercial banks, which might not be effective if they remain reluctant to lend.
