In our view, the new yuan-denominated crude futures contract should have no long-term impact on oil prices, even if it becomes a major benchmark. At any rate, a history of extreme volatility in China’s futures contracts and concerns about capital controls and government interference mean that it will probably be some time before a new oil futures contract rivals Brent or WTI.
