The appointment of Erdem Basci as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Turkey will no doubt lead to concerns about increased government influence over monetary policy. While these concerns are perhaps understandable, we think that they are probably overdone. A much bigger concern is whether the Bank – together with the government – will act quickly enough to curb a credit bubble and rein in widening current account deficit.
