Rise in the Turkish lira belies external vulnerabilities

The recent appreciation of the Turkish lira has taken many analysts – ourselves included – by surprise, not least because the economy still has large external vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities mean that, despite the strengthening of the exchange rate in recent weeks, over a 12-18 month horizon we think the currency is more likely to fall than rise against the dollar.
