The most convincing explanation for the recent rally in the ruble is the fact that the strains in Russia’s balance of payments have eased since the start of the year. Nonetheless, they haven’t gone away completely, and the big picture is still that of an economy in a deep crisis. Accordingly, although we are nudging up our end-year ruble forecast we still expect it to remain relatively weak against the US dollar.
