As Singapore celebrates its 50th anniversary since independence on 9th August, it can look back on a half-century in which it achieved enormous economic success. However, the country goes into its second 50 years facing doubts over the suitability of a growth model that has relied on high rates of immigration and a heavy-handed approach from the government.
