The central bank in Sri Lanka (CBSL) today kept its deposit and lending rates unchanged at 6.0% and 7.5%, respectively, despite headline inflation having been negative for the last three months. This reflects concerns about the external position deteriorating and unsustainable credit growth mounting. In fact, with inflation likely to rebound soon, we don’t think it will be long before the central bank starts to hike rates.
