Opposition candidate MaithripalaSirisena has emerged victorious in Sri Lanka’s presidential election. Markets have responded favourably, perhaps not so much to the result itself as to encouraging signs that there will be a smooth transfer of power. Differences over economic policy were not a major theme of the campaign but the change in leadership nonetheless creates significant uncertainty about the outlook for the economy.
