This week’s agreement between the US and Mexico has raised hopes that the US and China could also resolve their dispute. But the agreement with Mexico underlines how much hangs on whether President Trump wants a deal – rather than the specific offers of the two sides – so there is little China can do to make one more likely. And there is no sign that Mr Trump or those close to him want a ceasefire with China any time soon.
