Q2 slowdown isn’t just about Alberta wildfires

After a strong start to the year, the economy likely ended the first quarter badly and we now believe that it shrank significantly this quarter, partly because of significant disruptions to oil production caused by severe wildfires in Alberta. More importantly, the underlying momentum in the economy appears to have slowed and forward looking indicators on business investment and hiring warn that any rebound in the second half of the year will be unspectacular.
