The bigger than expected 0.5% m/m gain in July GDP means that the Bank of Canada’s forecast of a 3.5% annualised increase for the third quarter as a whole now looks well within reach. However, it is worth noting that July’s gain was entirely due to the continued recovery in oil production. The remainder of the economy was stagnant.
