South African elections: what to watch out for

The latest opinion polls suggest that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party will retain its majority when South Africa votes for a new national assembly in next week’s general elections. But there are a number of factors for investors to look out for. These include whether the ANC’s majority weakens, and if so to what extent, and also the performance of fringe parties. The most market-friendly outcome would be a weakening of the ANC’s majority and a better performance from the Democratic Alliance.
