Japan Consumer Prices (May 2023)

Nationwide inflation played out largely in line with the timelier Tokyo CPI data in May. Headline inflation fell largely due to a sharp fall in energy inflation, but inflation excluding fresh food and energy ticked up due to faster gains in “core” goods prices. We still expect a stronger yen and further feed through of lower commodity prices to bring inflation down below 3.0% by year-end.
