China’s statistics bureau claims that GDP was unchanged q/q in Q4. That is implausible, even accounting for December data showing surprising economic resilience in the face of the reopening wave of infections. Nevertheless, things are looking up for the Chinese economy, with more timely data pointing to a strong pick-up at the start of 2023.
