The sharp decline in the number of initial jobless claims towards the end of last year should not be interpreted as a sign that the labour market recovery is gaining momentum. Nonetheless, the 39,000 increase in non-farm payroll employment in November probably understated underlying jobs growth. Our econometric model suggests that payroll employment increased by a more respectable 130,000 in December.
