The monthly gains in payroll employment may soon rise above the 200,000 that have been the norm for most of the past year. This would be partly due to some catch-up after the recent extreme winter weather and partly due to a strengthening in economic conditions. Our econometric model points to an increase of around 230,000 in April, which would reduce the unemployment rate to 6.6% from 6.7% in March.
