The deal the US has apparently reached with China averts a full-blown trade war and provides another example of the administration backing down from tough rhetoric on trade in return for relatively minor concessions. To the extent that China does purchase more agricultural and energy goods from the US, that would narrow the bilateral deficit with China, but have a minimal impact on the broader trade balance.
