ONS release new statistics on private sector rental growth

The ONS have produced a new experimental index of private housing rental prices, which reports that rents in the private sector in May were around 1.3% higher compared to a year ago. That is a much lower growth rate than some alternative measures, which suggest rents are growing by more than 3.5%. The difference reflects the fact that the ONS measure includes changes in both existing and new rental agreements, rather than just new rental agreements.
