The surge in London house prices in recent years is often largely attributed to the relative strength of prime property, which itself is usually seen as the latest stage of a long standing trend. While there is something in the first of these stylised facts, the same is not true of the second. Indeed, the size of the premium enjoyed by prime markets suggests that they may well underperform over the medium term.
