We have been more sceptical than most that the Help to Buy mortgage guarantee will spark a new house price boom. Although the complexity of the scheme makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions, nothing in yesterday’s launch documentation has altered our mind. That said, constant speculation that a boom is inevitable risks generating a self-fulfilling surge in house price expectations.
