Government housing measures contain no miracle cure

The Government today announced a number of measures designed to “meet current challenges in the housing market”. While some of the measures will help to ease the hardship faced by a few of the families worst affected by the housing market downturn, we are puzzled by attempts to stimulate demand among first-time buyers and suspect that they will be unsuccessful. In short, there is nothing in today’s announcements to prevent the housing market correction from running its course.
