Competitive forces in the mortgage market have strengthened over the past year. But some types of borrowers have benefitted far more than others. In particular, pricing data show that competition to lend to borrowers with smaller deposits is still very limited. Accordingly, viewed in the round, we believe that mortgage market competition is currently only around two-thirds of normal levels.
