It has been suggested that central banks are already effectively tightening policy by withdrawing the emergency liquidity provided to the financial system during the depths of the crisis. But in the UK’s case, most of the support is actually still in place. And we continue to doubt that the Monetary Policy Committee will actively seek to tighten policy for a long time yet.
