In this morning’s MPC minutes, the Committee voiced some concern about how a rate rise might affect consumer confidence. The relationship between interest rates and consumer confidence has weakened since the early 1990s. But with consumers’ incomes squeezed and house prices already falling, we think that even a small rise in rates could hit sentiment hard.
