The greater attention devoted to the money supply in recent months does not herald the return of full-bloodied Monetarism as the key foundation of UK economic policy. Rather, it reflects current uncertainties regarding more conventional relationships in the economy and the effects of rising asset prices. As and when those uncertainties subside, the focus on the money supply is likely to fade too.
