Official figures show that households are saving the lowest share of their income since records began in 1960. The situation is not quite as bad as this if saving is adjusted to account for factors such as the shift to a low inflation environment and recent large capital gains. Nonetheless, a rise in saving still poses a key threat to consumer spending and economic growth in the next year or two.
