Mexico’s inflation expectations becoming unanchored

There is growing evidence that, despite Banxico’s best efforts, inflation expectations in Mexico are becoming unanchored. One consequence is that the monetary policy debate over the coming months will focus on the need for more rate hikes. However, we don’t think it precludes the possibility of an easing cycle and, indeed, we think the policy rate will finish 2019 lower than its current level.
