The Mexican government’s decision to hedge its oil revenues for next year will keep the fiscal position on a stable footing in the near-term. Nonetheless, a heavy reliance on oil revenues casts doubt over the medium-term sustainability of the public finances should oil prices fall much below $100pb and stay there. As such, the government must press ahead with reforms to boost tax revenues.
