Brazil: Retail strength unlikely to offset industrial weakness

Brazilian retail sales grew by far more than expected in November. But the strong performance is unlikely to have prevented the economy from slipping into a mild recession in the second half of last year as the industrial sector continued to contract. While GDP should return to growth this year, any expansion will probably be weaker than most expect. We have pencilled  in a rise of just 2.5%.
