The sharp pick-up in Brazilian retail sales over the past couple of months has fuelled hopes that the country’s consumer-led growth model has kicked back into gear. We’re not so sure. While spending on small-ticket items (which is covered by the retail sales data) does seem to have strengthened, spending on big-ticket items (which is not) remains extremely weak.
