Brazil Election Watch: First thoughts on Silva’s entry

The death last week of Socialist Party presidential candidate Eduardo Campos and the likelihood that he will be replaced at the top of the party’s ticket by Marina Silva, a former Environment Minister, has changed the dynamics of Brazil’s presidential race in several ways. From the perspective of the economy, however, we think the elections are now arguably less likely to trigger much-needed structural reforms.
