Why are firms borrowing more?

Despite exceptionally strong corporate profits and falling investment, corporate debt increased by the most since 2008 last quarter. With interest costs at record lows, firms seem to be borrowing to lend to other companies. While this is not a concern for now, it is questionable whether non-financial firms should engage in activities traditionally carried out by banks. It is therefore worth keeping an eye on this form of credit provision going forward.
