The decision by state-owned Nippon Telegraph & Telephone to take full ownership of its mobile phone arm seems to reflect pressure by new PM Suga. While Mr Abe tried to make companies more accountable to shareholders, Mr Suga seems to be going in the opposite direction, which is disconcerting. Meanwhile, the August activity data provide further evidence that the recovery continued as the second virus wave started to abate.
