Recent developments have strengthened the ruling BJP’s hand in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of parliament). This should help to ease the passage of economic reforms, provided that Prime Minister Modi has the appetite to pursue them. We suspect though that Mr Modi will be reluctant to spend his political capital on measures that, while positive for long-run growth, would be unpopular with voters.
