A strong showing in the Karnataka state election suggests that Prime Minister Modi’s BJP retains significant goodwill among the electorate. Mr Modi’s record to date suggests that he will continue to shy away from the most difficult – but potentially most beneficial – economic reforms. But this election result should reassure him that he can afford to continue with more limited policy liberalisation.
