Eighteen months ago the rupee plunged to a record low against the US dollar as concerns over India’s external vulnerabilities made it one of the hardest-hit economies during the “taper tantrum”. Since then, the balance of payments position has radically improved. We think this improvement will be sustained, meaning there is little risk of a repeat of the currency crisis of 2013.
