As the crisis in Italy escalated, record numbers of disillusioned jobseekers dropped out of the labour force, causing the unemployment rate to fall. Now that the lockdown is being lifted and activity is recovering, many of those people should return to the labour force. So an increase in the unemployment rate in the coming months could, paradoxically, be a sign that the economy is returning to some sense of normality.
