Recent surveys of consumer sentiment have suggested that German consumers are in schizophrenic mood. While they remain pretty upbeat about the economic outlook, they have yet to translate that into optimism for their own incomes. Until that happens, hopes of a significant pick-up in the growth of household spending are likely to be disappointed.
